Happening

The happening was great. there was so much energy and it was great to see all the people that I have not seen much of

this semester. Robbyn is amazing to put this all together. As I have expressed earlier, i just feel that there is so much more I could do in this class. i hope I can keep some of this good spirit going.

My humble contribution to the event:

Carrying Life

As mothers we not only give birth but we carry the lives of children on our

shoulders as long as we live. Some times are to be celebrated, some are

devastatingly painful, some chaotic, some peaceful. Carrying Life is about the

experience or motherhood in totality.

So, I didn't burn the school down which was a relief!

My sound was not as I had hoped because it was hard to hear some of the more subtle parts as there was so much going on in the space. That is ok, just the way things go with so many people.

The major surprise, however was the candles. I was off enjoying Anthony's incredible performance and when I made my way back to the

room check on things: Oh my! I guess if it had been timed to run the course of the evening, it could have been interesting. I don't know how one times candles.

Anyway, thats what you get with unpredictable art. I had fun. learned a lot, saw lots of terrific and fun pieces and its on to the next thing.

Sound

Last night we were treated to Mary's incredible web work and inspired to use sound as art. I had already decided to include sound in my work about mothers carrying life, so now I am taking the plunge and do not know what I am doing, but that is fun. I have a small voice recorder that I am trying to figure out and have downloaded Audacity. I plan to use the sounds of life and layer them together. For those of you who have seen my painting/drawing work you know that it makes sense as I am interested in the layering of time, moments lived and traces left.

Here is to trying new things.

Epiphany

We are making paper mache idioms in my freshman class. When one girl got the pendulum to move on her "grandfather clock" she exclaimed "Look I made something 4D!!!!" An intermedia artist in the making.

3D

I was very inspired by all the 3D work last night that came out of that one visit to urban ore. It seems things really pulled together in an amazing way and they were all so unique and different.

Progress of lack therof

I am really loving this blog thing. I just got home from school for the week and I am excited about having some time this weekend to do my project. (My daughter is going to help out with my mom.)
3D- things are not going as planned. I have tried and tried to find the perfect dress (sounds like a date.) to add to my canvas but can't seem to. So for now I am leaving a space for it and proceeding. It won't quite be 3D without it though.

I think I have a plan for my suitcase. I hope it is not too minimal.

The thing about this class is this: It has freed me up a bit to not try to make everything so serious and perfect!. I went to an art school for BFA where they weren't so nice as at JFK-lots of expectation and pressure.

My book journal is really a place where I can work things out-not as precious as a sketchbook. At first I felt bad (art school again) when I saw Bethany's and Sherri's and everyones' because they are all so beautifully done and stick to a theme. Mine is basically a mish mash of my chaotic life and very messy but now I am getting over it and having fun! Imagine that. FINALLY

Char Davies

I am posting the power point about Char Davies. I think she is a fascinating artist and am totally inspired by her translation of sensibilities from painting to 3D, something that I would like to explore, although not in that medium.
My presentation basically sucked though. I wanted to keep it short and simple because those things can get to long but after seeing the others, I didn't like mine. Also you probably have to experience her work to really get it.
Since then I found out that she now lives in SF, but has moved into environmental art and is doing something with boulders on 500 acres in Quebec. I love this woman and her energy!
I hope that I can figure out how to link this power point so I don't have to bug Robbyn.

blog stupidity and journal book

January 19

Ok, so my excitement with the blog wore off when it would not turn up in a google search. My blog hates me. I changed the name. It is now weavingspace but it must by typed in only at the top of start page.

I was going to get a new book to alter because the one I chose has very thin paper but I decided I liked it and had some time to work on it today. I chose the Great Books of Western Civilization book on Locke, Hume and Berkelely. I thought it was fitting to use a book such as that representing the canon of western thought since we are exploring new ways to approach the traditional forms of art. Scribbling on great thinkers (dead white men) seemed like a good idea. I began to read some of it though and it was pretty interesting. Oh well. too late.

first thoughts

January 16-Our first workshop class was wonderful and passed too quickly. I am excited by all the possibilities for materials. I am a little stuck with my words. The most enticing of the three is "entering a space." The way that I am seeing this is that uncomfortable feeling that I get when entering a space that is unfamiliar. How to portray that in 2D is another story.

My mind has already jumped to the 3D and 4D projects but I am trying to contain myself. Breathe and let it happen. I am grateful to Robbyn's generosity in sharing her own work and techniques, especially the film. My painting is alot about making marks and looking at past marks made by others so it fits right in.

Ok so my first blog did not work out. Maybe it was the name. Trying again.
